Dome Party

A few weeks ago, we went to a friends house to attend a "dome party". What does that mean you ask? Well, I wasn't quite sure what to expect either, but these folks go to the burning man festival every year, and the dome party is essentially preparing for this event.

A big part of burning man is camping in the desert for 8 days. You have to bring everything you'll need for these 8 days (with the exception of ice and restrooms), so it's important to be well prepared. This group builds two big domes as the main structures of their camp and we had to check and replace many of the metal rods used for the domes, patch and replace the reflective covering, modify the second floor platform for the big dome (yes - it has a suspended second floor!). Here's a picture of Dan and myself setting up the top level of the small dome.

Finishing the metal frame

The domes are really quite impressive and it is fun to build something that is a bit unusual but quite useful as well. Overall, the dome party can be described as geeks with powertools - a slightly hazardous but very fun combination :)
